New
Year Camp 2007
Tom
Cairns (Newtownbreda Baptist), Nathan McCavery (Moira Baptist) and Ian
Bleakley (Larbert Baptist, Scotland) went to Romania from 27th. December
- 4th. January to take part in a Teenage New Year Camp. Ian and Nathan
led the Bible studies at camp. Up to 100 young people from local Baptist
churches attended the camp and some came, by invitation, from Bucharest
and Giurgiu. The weather was truly magnificent and totally unexpected.
During the day the boys were playing football in 17 degrees C of heat
and although the nights were colder it was a healthy crisp coolness.
The day after camp finished the weather changed dramatically and Romania
was hit by severe snowstorms with many districts snowed-in. The New
Year was welcomed in, after a late night service, with fireworks and
much celebrating.
Nathan and Ian, as well as leading the camp Bible studies, also spoke
at various church services over the New Year weekend. It was an encouragement
to see two young men take on the responsibility of sharing God’s Word
with their peers and all were blessed through their teaching.
Installation
of new kitchen at Zimnicea
For many years the kitchen at the Bible Centre at Zimnicea has served
well and many meals have been cooked and served from within its walls,
However, the time had come to replace the kitchen because it was getting
very battered and tired looking. In April a team from Castlereagh Baptist
who had undertaken to raise the necessary funds to pay for a new kitchen,
travelled to Romania to do all the work needed to install the new units
and ovens.
The team, led by Pastor Keith Giles, consisted of plumbers, electricians
etc. The work was carried out in double quick time with the result that
with some extra money donated from back home, the team was able to carry
out the very necessary work of extending the accommodation available
in the centre by creating additional rooms in the roof space.
The group also took part in the weekend services at the local Baptist
churches through the ministries of preaching and song.
Turnu-Magurele
New Church Building
David McFarland (Moira Baptist) has for many years been a wonderful
supporter of our work in Southern Romania. He has had a burden, for
a long time, to provide the finances to enable the brothers and sisters
of the Turnu-Magurele Baptist church to build a very much-needed new
church building. The original church was built in the mid 1800’s and
is in a sad state of repair. David started a fund raising campaign six
months ago and to date has raised £15,000.00 for this project.
We thank God for his provision. The new site (which is nearer the town
centre and on a main road) has been cleared and construction work will
begin soon.
Summer
Camps 2007
The teenagers camp begins this year on Monday 13th. August until Saturday
18th. August. A team of 17 (young and not so young) will travel from
Northern Ireland to help run the camp. The team will be made up of members
from Castlereagh, Newtownbreda, Moira and Mountpottinger Baptist churches
with two others from other denominations. The camps will again consist
of Bible study, games and inter-cultural fellowship.
Because some of the leaders for the children’s camp had other commitments,
this camp was held earlier this year and has already taken place. Reports
already indicate that, as usual, the fifty plus children had a special
and exciting time.
Mini-bus
We are getting to the stage when we very much need to replace our aging
mini-bus. We would like to purchase a seventeen-seater bus (preferably
diesel). This will involve raising a lot of finance to cover the funding
of this project. Please pray for this especially over the coming months
as we try to raise the funds.
